The French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson best expressed how we see photography:

"To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression.

...if the shutter was released at the decisive moment, you have instinctively fixed a geometric pattern without which the photograph would have been both formless and lifeless.

Photography implies the recognition of a rhythm in the world of real things. What the eye does is to find and focus on the particular subject within the mass of reality; what the camera does is simply to register upon film the decision made by the eye."

from the preface to Images á la Sauvette (Images on the Run),  published in English as The Decisive Moment (1952).

The kind of photojournalism I like to see and try to shoot goes a step further. I like to think of myself as empathetic and alert. More important to me than the compositional decisive moment is the emotional  decisive moment-- the point where the viewer I'm standing in for can understand and feel something beyond the "outside-in" identification of actions and actors. When successful, my "side-by-side" approach provides some genuine insight into the telling gestures of the athlete at the moment of success or failure, the speaker at the emotional center of a speech, the child at a moment of joy or discovery , the performer in the throes of creation, the observers at the quiet edges of a public event... Large events and small deserve the same level of respect and attention to detail.

"BlueHammer" is  a nod to an old  nickname of my late graphic artist father--to whom quality mattered.

The over-pixelated blue hammer also suggests the goal— visual impact. “BlueHammer” expresses the seamless connection between how photographs should look and what, properly executed, they should do

My work has been published in The Bernardsville News, The Black River News, the Citizen, the Echoes-Sentinel, the Mount Olive Chronicle, the Observer-Tribune, the Randolph Reporter, the Roxbury Register, the Hanover Eagle, the Hunterdon Review, the Progress, Today in Hunterdon as well as the Long Valley Patch and numerous other sites online.I am the event photographer for the Black Potatoe Independent Music Festival and the River Town Film Festival.
